John F. Hodgman, Professor of High Tech Workforce Development UMASS Lowell
Since his retirement in 2001 as President and CEO of the Massachusetts Technology Development Corporation (MTDC), Mr. Hodgman has focused his professional activities on teaching entrepreneurship and assisting nonprofit organizations that deal with education and career development. He is the Howard Foley Professor for High Tech Workforce Development at the School of Engineering at the University of Massachusetts-Lowell, and a Lecturer in Entrepreneurship at Tufts University. He currently serves with several nonprofit organizations as a member of the:
- Planning Committee for the Massachusetts STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) Summits
- Executive Committee of the Northeast Regional Pre K to 16 STEM Network
- Board of Directors of Machine Sciences, Inc
- Board of Directors of JFYNetworks, Inc.
- Board of Directors of the Massachusetts Technology Leadership Council Educational Foundation
- Board of Overseers of the Brookline Educational Foundation, Inc.
From 1984 to 2001, Mr. Hodgman led the MTDC team of professionals in earning a nationwide reputation as one of the most successful state chartered venture capital firms. During this period, the firm managed investments in over 110 early-stage technology companies.
Between 1968 and 1984, Mr. Hodgman was an operating executive in three organizations. He was President and CEO of Stewart Systems Corporation, a computer software company; Director (CEO) of the Massachusetts Employment Security Agency; and Director of Personnel Management for the New England Group of Coopers & Lybrand (currently PricewaterhouseCoopers, LLP.).
From 1993 to 1996, Mr. Hodgman was a member of the School Committee of the Town of Brookline. In 1981, he co-founded the Brookline Education Foundation, one of the first local education foundations in the Commonwealth, and served as Chairman of its Board of Directors until 1993. He also assisted in the founding of the Brookline High School 21st Century Fund between 1996 and 1998.
Mr. Hodgman earned a B.A., magna cum laude, from Boston College in 1966 and attended the University of Virginia Law School from 1966 to 1967. He served in the United States Air Force Reserve from 1967 to 1973.
