As companies increasingly designate Lead Directors, the role varies substantially from company to company and can change dramatically. Company culture, board dynamics, the relationship with the CEO/Chair and the external environment all contribute to the challenges for those Directors serving in the Lead Director capacity. Lynn Thompson Hoffman, Lead Director for Boston Private Financial Holdings, Inc. recipient of the 2007 New England Chapter of the NACD "Best Board in New England" award shares her experience and perspective on the trials and tribulations of the Lead Director role.
About the speaker:
LYNN THOMPSON HOFFMAN is the Lead Director of Boston Private Financial Holdings, Inc., a NASDAQ traded wealth management company based in Boston. Lynn has served in the Lead Director role since 2005 and currently Chairs the Company's Compensation Committee. A Director since 1995, she has previously served as Chair of the Finance and Governance Committees. An attorney and private investor, Lynn is a former investment banker with Paine Webber and publishing executive with Houghton Mifflin Company. Residing in Santa Fe, New Mexico, Mrs. Hoffman serves on the Investment Committee for the Museum of New Mexico Foundation and as a Director of the New Mexico Governor's Mansion Foundation. Previous Board service includes the Massachusetts Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children (Chair, Finance and Investment), the American Association of Publishers, the Shirley Eustis House Association (President), First Mutual Bank (Director), New England Conservatory (Overseer), Babson College (Overseer), and Harvard Community Health Plan (Overseer).
