Traditional way of bringing new medical devices to market begins with market research (if we're lucky) or with a new idea within the R&D team. After a rigorous market validation, product development, and regulatory clearance, the product is finally launched into the medical world. Today, physicians are getting much more active in challenging and changing this process. We are seeing a variety of new technologies, conceived in the surgical suite or at the patient side, brought out via hospital-based technology transfer organizations. Transfer of a physician's concept into a commercial product involves traditional risks and efforts as well as new challenges for all the participants.
