Christoph Westphal is CEO and vice chair of Sirtris Pharmaceuticals, Inc., a cutting edge biotech company he co-founded in 2004. Sirtris develops and commercializes novel therapeutics that modulate sirtuins, which promote the body's natural defense against disease. The company's primary focus is on delivering high concentrations of resveratol - a compound found in red wine - as a way to combat aging and increase longevity. Sirtris's promising research has already brought it more than $80 million in venture capital funding, and its IPO last summer raised an additional $69 million. In January 2008, Sirtris announced strong positive results from an early stage clinical trial of their SRT501 drug - which some have dubbed a "fountain of youth" drug.
Westphal is a former general partner at Polaris Venture Partners, where he invested in dozens of life science companies and co-founded and served as CEO for five, including Alnylam Pharmaceuticals, Inc., and Momenta Pharmaceuticals, Inc. He remains a key player in venture capital as senior advisor and chairman of the life science advisory board for IDG Ventures - working to grow the firm's life science investment initiatives. Westphal graduated with a B.A. summa cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa from Columbia University, received his M.D. from Harvard Medical School, and earned his Ph.D. in Genetics from Harvard University.
